My name is David Webb, I am a first degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Mauricio Gomes, a black belt in Judo with the British Judo Association and a second degree black belt in Shotokan Karate under the Japan Karate Association. I’ve have been training martial arts for over 25 years and since 2000 been the head coach of my own successful martial arts academy – the Tōukon Academy – the largest and most successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Bedfordshire.
Since I began my own personal martial arts journey in the early 1990’s I have spent years training in various styles; exhausted those accepted as traditional and competed in those considered more functional. I have honed my skills with striking-based arts as well as various grappling systems. Never complacent, I have combined this with every conceivable kind of fitness routine and sought to better my own personal knowledge up to degree level.
Over the last few years I have concentrated my focus to develop a series of programmes that I believe provide the ultimate lifestyle transformation. The routines I personally engage in every single day have been refined and structured into a complete package that has successfully transformed many individuals: men, women and children, sports teams, members of the armed and emergency services and professionals across every walk of life physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually and I’d like to share what I have learned with you on the mats of my academy.

Throughout the ages people have sought ways to improve their fitness, well-being and health. Mostly mundane and repetitive the majority leave us uninterested, exhausted and frustrated, with little to show for our effort. Nevertheless, a quick search online unearths millions of ways to ‘hack’ your life for the better: fitness, nutrition, sleep, executive, cognitive and cerebral functioning. Some approaches add value to life, so many more get rebuked, many are extreme and cosmetic yet few are subtle and profound. Each week a new craze, a new ‘protocol’, a new ‘methodology’ is created often with its very own jargon and spin on a much older approach that has fallen before it. New workouts are advertised through infomercials containing a ’28-day’ detox, upgrade or fix as well as a ‘money back guarantee’ usually accompanied by a shot of testosterone and a professional airbrush to suck you – the consumer – in for a quick buck.
MY PROGRAMME IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT.
Jiu-Jitsu is the thinking man’s martial art. It’s like a game of physical chess, requiring all of your resources to challenge you on many different levels.
When I first enrolled at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York City I would hear people say how Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a way of life, how it made them better human beings, how they couldn’t, wouldn’t ever stop or trade it for anything else. Honestly, I thought these people were a little crazy. I’d see them at the academy when I trained in the morning, then I’d also seen them if I trained at night, and I couldn’t help but wonder if they had any lives outside BJJ. Little did I know I’d become one of them.
It’s as real as it can get. This has made me a better person. It’s made me a better man. It’s made me understand myself, my weaknesses, my strength’s, the shit I need to work on. Jiu-Jitsu has been one of the most valuable tools I’ve ever had in my life.

WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) acts as many things to many people. A competitive sport with an enormous network of associations stretching across the globe, a mechanism trusted as the world’s #1 form of personal self-defence and an enrichment tool that quite literally transforms lives. Refined across many generations, BJJ, as we have come to understand it, is a complete grappling system that encourages both standing and ground techniques. Derived from traditional Japanese Ju-Jitsu and more recently Kodakan Judo, classes are conducted in a Jiu-Jitsu uniform called a kimono. Jiu-Jitsoka are ranked based on their ability to apply technique underpinned by the universal concepts and principles of body mechanics and physics.
BJJ places heavy emphasis on positional strategy; in Jiu-Jitsu, the position you are in relation to your opponent is paramount. The objective is to first establish a position, and then to finish the fight via submission utilising efficient leverage through a joint from either top or bottom positions. Universally, Jiu-Jitsu is considered the #1 martial art for self-defence and is perfect for women and children. Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu six years ago was a step into the unknown. After trying other martial arts which did not provide the expected satisfaction or challenge, BJJ opened my mind to the real and practical application of martial arts and grappling techniques.
